EMPIRE OF NOMADS
In 2008, as part of my MA thesis, I set out to explore the concept of the American Dream and discovered the neighboring villages of Empire and Gerlach on the edge of the Black Rock Desert in Nevada. During my research, I encountered a diverse group of nomads—from motel cleaners to teachers—representing various ages and experiences. Despite their differences, they all shared a common desire for a life filled with wonder and freedom.
Years later, I watched in astonishment as the opening scenes of "Nomadland," directed by Chloe Zhao, unfolded. The film depicted the same landscapes and nomadic lives I had observed, particularly through the character of Fern, who mirrored many individuals I had met during my exploration of the small nomadic community and who I most definitely met. This experience reaffirmed my belief in the significance of my MA project and the profound stories of those living the nomadic lifestyle.
